With an older dog, the problem usually manifests itself when the dog tries to protect its owner, territory or property. Melissa was a young Mum with a 5 year old and a toddler. She used to walk her Australian Cattle Dog with the baby in a stroller. One day as they passed an elderly man, the dog bit him. Melissa was upset and had no idea why this happened.

There were two reasons; one was that the dog was actually owned by her husband, who was in the army and away from the home for some months and therefore there was no longer an alpha male in the home; so the dog took on that role. In fact Melissa should have become the authority figure, and then the problem may not have occurred. Secondly, there was a new baby for the dog to protect. They neutered the dog, but it happened again and the dog was euthanized. Melissa was unable to stop dog biting and the results were catastrophic.

My husband and I were walking our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel when we were attacked by two greyhounds (they had got out of their yard as the gate was left open). Both of us ended up on the ground and our little dog was seriously hurt. She ended up on life support for four days but did survive. The police had the greyhounds put down. All of the misery would have been avoided if the greyhounds were muzzled to stop dogs from biting, or if their owner would have simply closed the gate.

The dog training and tricks procedures mentioned above should help to stop dog biting and make sure that your pet is well behaved. However, as this is such a serious problem, get professional help if you cannot stop dog biting yourself.
