Stop Dog Barking NOW
Even a young puppy can be a nuisance with constant barking. You need
to know how to stop dog barking regardless of its age. The first thing to understand is that there can be a
number of reasons as to why a dog barks.
Initially it is usually caused by the dog getting a fright. His normal instinct is
to bark loudly, as this may frighten away whatever it was that scared him. It is a defence mechanism and should
stop quickly once he realises that there is nothing there to do him harm.
Intruders
When a dog sees something unusual around his territory, he can also bark. Even after
the ‘thing’ has disappeared, he may continue barking for a while as he thinks his bark frightened the ‘thing’ away
and he wants to make sure it does not come back. If you have intruders on your property, this is a great time for
your dog to bark.
I live in a double story house on 2 acres of land in a country town in Victoria,
Australia. My Cavalier King Charles Spaniels like to sit at the upstairs bedroom window and often see a rabbit or a
hare in the yard. Wow! Does that cause an alarm bell to go off in their heads! They bark like crazy and I have
found the best solution is to ignore them. To stop dog barking, I simply do not pay them any attention and they
just cease barking after a couple of minutes.

Noise from Neighbours
The next door neighbour has a large dog that seldom barks, but he does run up and
down the wire fence, so my dogs can see his legs amongst the trees. They want to protect their property, so they
bark at him, warning him not to come closer. In the summer they have children in the pool, squealing with delight.
My dogs are not familiar with children screaming and see this as a threat, so bark at them too. One solution could
be for me to stop dog barking, would be to block the fence off so my dog cannot see the neighbour’s dog, but I
can’t stop the noise of the children. However, by me ignoring the situation, my dog soon stops barking.
Having Fun
Dogs will also bark just for the fun of it. I tend to be an early
riser and am often up at 4am. My dogs get up with me and pop outside to relieve themselves. One of the dogs
thinks this is a perfect time to bark for a couple of minutes. It seems as though she is telling the world she
is here and doing fine. But I am pretty sure my neighbours do not appreciate it. The solution is to have her
on a lead to relieve herself and to bring her inside when she is finished.
You must find a solution to stop dog barking as it is most annoying to everyone,
including yourself. Make sure your dog is well exercised as exercise and training make a dog tired and they are
less likely to have the energy to bark all the time if they are tired.
