Stop Dog Aggression
Now!
There is nothing scarier than having your beloved pet turn
aggressive. Initially you may notice this aggressive behaviour towards other dogs, and you may even think it
funny at first, but if it continues it can become more serious until you are desperate to stop dog aggression
in your beloved pet.
Let’s consider the reasons this may be occurring. Perhaps your dog is not well
socialised. He seldom leaves the home or the backyard and even though he may have another dog as a companion and is
fine with them, when he is out and sees another dog he becomes aggressive. So how do you stop dog aggression like
this?
First Step
The first
step is, when you have a new puppy you must socialise it with other dogs and people. Many large Vet Clinics hold
puppy orientation classes and you should attend these. You can also join a dog obedience group when your pup is 3
months old and complete classes for at least three months. Not only will you learn some basic dog training skills,
but your dog will learn to socialise and listen to your commands when there are other dogs and people
around.
This needs to be an ongoing activity. I have two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
and did dog training and special clicker training with the young dog, Cooper. But as he progressed with the clicker
training, I stopped going to obedience classes and did all his training at home. Twelve months later if he even saw
another dog at the vet he would bark madly (not really aggressively, but nevertheless it was a real nuisance) so I
took him back to dog obedience for a short time to socialise him again. I repeated this every 6-10
months.
This book will help with behavior
problems from house training a puppy to how to
stop dog aggression
Reasons and Solutions for Dog
Aggression
You may need to stop dog aggression in a dog that
is not neutered. Dogs are much more aggressive when they have male hormones egging them on! Similarly, if
your dog is protecting his property, territory, or you, he can become aggressive.
Obviously you need to neuter any dog that starts to show aggression towards other
dogs, unless of course you are showing him or want to breed from him. Similarly, if your dog is being protective,
you want him to be this way, but you also want him to obey you and you need to be able to stop dog aggression if
necessary.
The solution is to have a well trained dog. You are the boss, the leader, the
alpha being; and your dog needs to know it. If your dog shows any form of aggression (even a low growl) put a stop
to it immediately. The command ‘No’ has very little effect in aggressive situations. However a growl with your
teeth bared could get a good response and stop dog aggression, if it is done in the early days of him exhibiting
aggressive tendencies. I would not suggest you do this if the dog is in a full throated attack mode as it is best
not to even have eye contact if the dog is acting very aggressively towards you.
How to Stop Dog
Aggression
It could also be a good idea to use a muzzle or one of
the special leads and mouth restrainers that are available. These are not cruel and do not hurt the dog, but
can stop them from opening their jaws wide enough to bite. It could be a good way to start your training to
stop dog aggression and you should be able to remove these restrictions after you are sure he will not attempt
to bite when he is on the lead with you in command.
Another way to stop dog aggression (especially if your dog is being trained using
food rewards) is to distract him with food. Give a command to get his attention; once he is looking at you let him
see (and he will smell) the food. As soon as he gives you attention, give him the reward. Then immediately give
another command and drop the food on the ground. He will go to pick it up and begin to focus even more on
you. Repeat this process a few times until he has his mind totally on you and
the reward.
I really do believe that if you have shown strong leadership qualities from the
start and absolutely do not allow even the slightest hint of aggression, in most dogs, the aggression tendencies
will subside. But you may have great difficulties with the breeds of dogs that are ‘hard wired’ to be
aggressive e.g. Rottweilers, Dobermans and Pit Bull Terriers. In these cases you should seek professional help to
stop dog aggression.
