Training to Eliminate
Dog Behavior Problems
When buying a new puppy, it is important to start training right form the
beginning. Your puppy is no doubt very cute, but if certain behaviors are not addressed early and if the owner
does not establish that they are the alpha dominant one, the puppy could grow up with destructive behaviors
that will be much harder to break as an adult. There are very simple solutions to many dog behavior problems,
and if the training starts as soon as the puppy enters the household, many problems will not even
manifest.

Problems You May Encounter
There are many different types of dog behavior problems; one of these dog behavior
problems is excessive barking. There are some dogs that seem to bark at every possible noise, person, other dog or
animal; or just for the fun of it. This barking can become annoying to both the owner and the neighbor and needs to
be nipped in the bud quickly. The solution is to keep your dog tired (from walking or training) and not let him get
bored.
Another dog behavior problem that upsets most owners is when they dig in the yard.
Digging can cause a lot of damage and can be difficult to stop once it has started. Digging creates holes in the
yard and can destroy gardens and flower beds which were costly to establish. Also if the dog is digging near the
fence boundary of the yard, the holes can go beneath the fence, allowing the dog to escape and possibly come to
some harm.
When there is more than one pet in the home, there can also be a dog behavior
problem with food aggression. Dogs may decide to protect their food from the other animals, snapping at them or
chasing them away from their food dish. Snapping can lead to biting, and if there are small children in the home,
the behavior can also be directed towards them if they are close by.
With my two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Rag Doll
cat, to ensure there was not a dog behavior problem with food aggression, I did the following. Firstly they
were taught to sit in front of their dish and not touch the food until I told them to. Secondly, I never give
one some food (even if it was a treat) without the other also getting a piece, even if it is just one piece of
cat kibble. Thirdly, when it is the main meal time, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels sit on a mat (where
they can see me) and when the food is ready, I call the cat and put him in the cattery with his food, while
the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels wait on the mat. I then place their dishes in two different spots in the
room and tell them when they can go to their food. In this way I have two dogs without a dog behavior problem
with food aggression

If two male dogs are not neutered they can also be aggressive towards each
other. Also dog to dog aggression can arise between certain types of dogs e.g. Akita Inu, Bull Terriers and
Rottweilers. In addition to these aggression problems, there are also dog behavior problems involving issues
such as separation anxiety, chewing, thieving, running away and whining.
You will be surprised at how many dog behavior problems will not occur (or are
easy to stop), by just undertaking a general dog training session regularly (at least four times a week).
However, every day your dog should be asked to respond to a command of some sort.
